Fans of classic PC games are in for a treat, as Atari has released RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic on Android and iOS. This brings the classic RollerCoaster Tycoon games to mobile for the first time, and there’s a distinct lack of microtransactions liable to ruin your experience too.
RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic combines the best bits of the original PC game and its sequel. So anyone who loved RollerCoaster Tycoon or RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 back in the day SHOULD get what they want from this release. Fingers crossed.
A London-based company called Origin8 Technologies is responsible for bringing the game to mobile. And they have successfully redesigned it to work on touchscreens. Atari also got Chris Sawyer, the original developer of the first two RollerCoaster Tycoon games, on board as a producer.
According to Polygon, Sawyer said:
“As the creator of the original RollerCoaster Tycoon PC games many years ago, I have seen how much excitement and entertainment they have brought to players all over the world.”
“It was my long term ambition to bring the classic game to modern touchscreen devices as its visual style and tactile nature are so well suited to smartphones and tablets.”
In-App Purchases vs. Microtransactions
RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic offers 95 scenarios from across the two games. You can also create your own rollercoasters, manage your park’s profits, and customize your park with hundreds of different coasters, stalls, shops, and facilities. All brought to life with isometric graphics.
RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic is available on Android (requiring Android 4.0.3 and up) and on iOS (requiring iOS 7.0 and up). It costs $5.99 for the main game, with the entirely optional Wacky Worlds and Time Twister addons priced at $1.99 apiece.
Offering optional in-app purchases for those who want more is a good thing. While microtransactions required to actually progress through the game are a bad thing. So it appears Atari has learned its lesson from the microtransactional mess that was RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile.
